- Skits for Jesus - Monday, December 05, 2005

A battle won: I do not have to direct a musical for the spring production. This is very good because our school does not have the capability to produce an excellent musical.

A battle lost: However, the play must be "Christian." Funny, every time I ask "and what does that mean?" no one can really tell me.

I guess it could be worse- i could have to do a Christian Musical.

So has anyone ever seen or read Shadowlands by William Nicholson or God's Favorite by Neil Simon? Please Please Please let me know if you have.

Or, if you have any suggestions here, they are much appreciated. Please dont recommend the play your mom wrote for your youth group's drama team, even though I'm sure it was great. Also, if Jesus makes a cameo- i'm probably not interrested. other than that, i would love your help.

Well, I'd say "Mass Appeal", but from our conversations, I'm not seeing the church you're working with enjoying a story about an alcoholic priest and the ex-sex-aholic priest-in-training he's working with. Find the movie (starring Jack Lemmon), and you'll get the whole idea. Oh, and never try to do "Inherit the Wind", even if you "re-write" it. Christians don't like it for some reason.

How about performing a stage version of Spartacus or Quo Vadis? Some of the Christian camps here show one of those movies on movie night. I think with some minor changes they could work. I mean you would need a smaller version of Rome burning and well omitting the orgies. Or...how about something totally different, this will get the okay, an Adventures in Odyssey play.
Seriously, you have my sympathies. I am praying for you to know find the right play for your students and for your 'boss.'

Luke is directing Shadowlands this summer. I haven't read it yet, but he said it would probably be really difficult to do with a group of high schoolers. I don't know in what way though, you should ask him.
